Fragile Travertine As mentioned in an earlier image description, travertine is a rather fragile material compared to the geyserite that makes up most of Yellowstone's geysers and other thermal features. Once a spring dries up, the travertine may crumble over time.<br>

This is one of many reasons why it is so important that unique places like Mammoth Hot Springs be protected so that future generations can enjoy them.
