I consider myself privileged to be able to live in a rural
part of Vermont, one of the most beautiful, natural states in the USA. Sure,
there are times when I miss the conveniences of the city, and I do think
that winter here lasts just a bit too long! But on the whole, the
benefits outweigh the disadvantages, at least for me. And one of the greatest
advantages of living here is being able to enjoy the annual splendor of a
New England autumn.
The many deciduous trees on the mountainsides, in the valleys, and along the streams and lakes of Vermont begin to change color starting as early as
the end of August. Through the month of September and into October, as the
temperature drops and summer fades to fall, the greens of the Green
Mountains transform into a riot of gold, orange, red and purple. It is a
time for harvest, for fresh apple cider and pumpkin pie, of crisp days and cool
nights. And it is also a time for some of the most spectacular scenery the
world has to offer.
For a photographer, Vermont in the autumn is an "embarrassment of riches".
Each year I try to spend several days and nights walking and driving around southern Vermont, searching for unique images that capture the essence of
foliage season. This SceneSet contains 65 of my favorite images, chosen from
several hundred that I took during September and October 2003.
I selected the images for this screensaver/slideshow to illustrate as many
moods of Vermont's autumn as possible. In it you will see breathtaking
mountain-top panoramas, wide views of many of southern Vermont's lush
valleys, images of classic Vermont scenes, and the relaxing images of misty
lakes reflecting foliage early in the morning. Since I like to experiment, I
have also included some of my favorite "unusual" images here, including
impressionistic pastels taken after dusk, abstracts of color and shape, and
even some unique long-exposure shots of fall foliage taken by moonlight with
star trails in the sky.
