I traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area in September 2003 for a friend's wedding. Naturally, I couldn't resist checking out some of the more beautiful locations in this fantastic area. One of the locations on my list was the Muir Woods National Monument. This magical area was set aside in 1905 as a way to preserve the then-dwindling old-growth redwood forest in the Bay Area. It was named after famous conservationist John Muir. The day I visited San Francisco was a foggy one -- which is of course not uncommon. While the high fog made the day seem dreary, it was in fact ideal for a visit to Muir Woods. The fog above created a soft light that seemed to make the trees and foliage glow. To really appreciate the humbling feeling of walking amongst these behemoths on a quiet path lined with ferns next to a quiet stream, you really need to visit in person.
